Thanksgiving Week Band Notes!

Happy Thanksgiving week!

I am certainly thankful for getting to work with our amazing students here at Aux Sable!

Recital Performance Forms

Please return all Recital Performance Forms TOMORROW (Monday) so I can get music for students with ample time for them to practice. If you need an additional form, they can be found under the “Forms” tab on this site. I encourage you to do this! Any grade, any instruments, from a group of 2 to a group of 7 can participate! We will rehearse during study halls in January.

6th Grade Concert

Information regarding the 6th grade concert on Wednesday, Dec. 6 has been sent home with your students last week.  It can also be found on our band website under the “Forms” tab. Please be sure students arrive on time and are in FULL uniform! Parents that volunteered to help will be contacted via email after Thanksgiving break. If any students are interested in helping set up at 4:30, a sign-up sheet has been posted in the band room. Please do not have them arrive any earlier, as I will not be back into the building until then.

7th, 8th, and Jazz Concert

Information regarding the 7th, 8th, and Jazz concert on Wednesday, Dec. 13 was sent home at the end of last week. Jazz Band members should wear their Jazz Shirts along with their uniform bottoms. In the meantime, you can find all the information under the “Forms” tab on this website. Parents that volunteered to help will be contacted via email after Thanksgiving break. If any students are interested in helping set up at 4:30, a sign-up sheet has been posted in the band room. Please do not have them arrive any earlier, as I will not be back into the building until then.

Field Trip Update

We are almost sold out of tickets for the band/choir field trip, so if your student has not turned in their order yet and would still like to attend, please do so as soon as possible. If you are chaperoning, you will receive an email from me after the turn-in deadline of Dec. 14th with more information.

Barnes N Noble Musicians

Music and parts have been assigned for the B&N night on Dec. 15th. An email was sent home last week in regards to more specified information. We will rehearse during study hall after Thanksgiving break, and a more detailed itinerary will be sent home then as well. In the meantime, try to find your folding stand if you can’t seem to find it, as you will need it for the event! This is a fun time for everyone!

Practicing at Home

As you know, what we do in class is a practiced skill that must be continuously reinforced outside of the classroom, as in many ways as a sport would be. Some people have asked about appropriate length and how long should practice sessions be? That all varies depending on each individual student, but a good rule of thumb would be to at least practice on the days we don’t have band class, and for a minimum of 15 minutes. More tips on practicing can be found under the “parents” tab, and they have been discussed in class as well. Even if it is simply reading notes aloud while going over fingerings or listening to the songs we are playing while following along with the music, every little bit helps to ensure a positive musical experience. Ask your students to play for you at home, too—showing your support for what they do here is a great way to help them continue to be excited and ready to learn! In order to continue to hear a “full band” sound at home, please have your students listen to the recordings of their concert music found on their grade level “Concert Music” page (and perhaps even try to play along with it!)

As always, if you have any questions, please email me, as that is the best way to reach me.

Thank you and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

-Mrs. Bedore

Band Notes, Week of 11.12.17

Hello everyone!

There is a lot of information this week, so please take time to read our Band Notes carefully!

Jazz Band

I’m not quite sure what the glitch was for the ASMS announcements, but when in doubt, please follow the jazz band schedule posted under the “Jazz Band” page of this site for all rehearsal dates for the year.

Cookie Dough Pickup

Cookie Dough Pickup is THIS THURSDAY at DRAUDEN POINT from 4:30-7pm. Once again, if you’ve placed an order, you MUST be there to pick it up within that time frame. If you need to come a few minutes early, that is fine, but we cannot hold anything overnight, as the items need to be refrigerated and Drauden does not have space to store stuff.

Recital Performance Forms

Please return all Recital Performance Forms no later than Nov. 20th, so I can get music for students with ample time for them to practice.

6 will be sent home with your students this week.  It can also be found on our band website under the “Forms” tab. Please be sure students arrive on time and are in FULL uniform!

7th, 8th, and Jazz Concert

Information regarding the 7th, 8th, and Jazz concert on Wednesday, Dec. 13 will be sent home soon. Jazz Band members should wear their Jazz Shirts along with their uniform bottoms (We should be getting the shirts in soon). In the meantime, you can find all the information under the “Forms” tab on this website.

Field Trip Update

We are almost sold out of tickets for the band/choir field trip, so if your student has not turned in their order yet and would still like to attend, please do so as soon as possible. If you are chaperoning, you will receive an email from me after the turn-in deadline of Dec. 14th with more information.

In the meantime, try to find your folding stand if you can’t seem to find it, as you will need it for the event! This is a fun time for everyone!

Study Hall Rehearsals

We have been using our study halls for “mini-band” rehearsals, so students get to hear the other instrument parts that they don’t normally get to hear during their own classes. Each grade level is divided into two or three “mini-bands.” In order to continue to hear a “full band” sound at home, please have your students listen to the recordings of their concert music found on their grade level “Concert Music” page (and perhaps even try to play along with it!)

Practicing at Home

As you know, what we do in class is a practiced skill that must be continuously reinforced outside of the classroom, as in many ways as a sport would be. Band Notes 11.02.17

Good afternoon Band Parents!
My apologies for not getting the notes out sooner, but I am dealing with a family emergency and have not been able to update the site this week as normal. Please continue to have patience, and I hope things will be back up and running normally soon.

Cookie Dough Pick Up
Please make sure that if you turned in cookie dough fundraiser money, the date to pick up your orders is on Thursday, Nov. 16th at DRAUDEN POINT Middle School between 4:30-7pm. We can NOT store your orders there for you! The items are fresh, and need to be refrigerated/frozen

Recital Opportunities
In January, we have a chance for small ensembles to perform a recital night in front of family and friends. It is a low-stress way to learn how to play in a small group and learn more independence as a musician. I have emailed the form as well as put it on the “forms” page of this site if you are interested. Please fill it out and return it no later than Nov. 20th so I am able to gather music for the students. In order for a group to be complete, ALL group must submit an individual form with their group members’ names on it and a parent signature.

Field Trip Update
We are close to selling out of the 400 tickets for the band/choir field trip. If your student is still interested in attending, please do not wait to turn in the form and money. Also, please be sure the form is filled out COMPLETELY, both sides, or it will be given back to the student. If your student has been given their form back, please return it in a timely manner so they are able to attend the trip. When in doubt, please ask your student if they got theirs returned to them. I will send out individualized emails in the near future.

Barnes N Noble ensembles have been set, and students have received a packet of music. Please note that we will only select 3 or 4 songs from the packet to play; those, along with which parts they are playing, will TBD soon.

Practice Log
I have included a practice log under the “Forms” tab. This is a visual way to see how much students are practicing each week and how reinforced playing at home helps them be successful in our class. While it is not mandatory and therefore not graded, I do encourage students to use this to take a good look at how their effort helps them become successful. A few students are currently using it so far, and it can be an eye-opener in such a positive way! Band Notes – Week of 10.15.17

Good afternoon everyone! Happy Sunday! 🙂

Our Cookie Dough fundraiser has now ended. Please turn in your order forms with ONE check made payable to “Plainfield Middle School Band Boosters” by first period this Wednesday, the 18th. If you have sold more than 5 items, please be sure to also turn in your prize sheet. (These were emailed home at the beginning of the fundraiser, and you can find extras on the “Forms” page of our band website) Cookie Dough Pickup will be on Thursday, Nov. 16th from 4:30-7 pm at DRAUDEN POINT. You MUST pick up your order during this time, as the items must be refrigerated/frozen and we are not able to store them for you.

Field Trip – We have exceeded our capacity for chaperones at this time. Students are still able to turn in their trip money until Dec. 14th or until we have sold all 400 tickets. Please be sure to read and fill out the form in its entirety, both sides, in order for your student to secure their ticket.

Barnes N Noble Night – Our annual Barnes N Noble night will be held on Friday, Dec. 15th from 4-7pm. This year, the choir will be splitting the time slots with us, and we are only able to bring three small ensembles. I have opened this up to 8th graders first as this is their final year at ASMS, and then will fill in any spots with 7th graders, then 6th graders who are interested. Choir will be singing on the hours (4, 5, 6 pm) and the band ensembles will be playing on the halves (430, 530, 630 pm). Sign up sheets are in the band room. We will have an all woodwind ensemble, a mixed woodwind/brass/bells ensemble, and an all brass ensemble. Ensembles will rehearse during Study Hall closer to the performance date, so students from different classes can play together. For those students that are also in choir and might be interested in singing, please see Ms. Cihlar during your class.

7th and 8th Grade Scale Quizzes are this week! Both grades will be performing their Bb and Eb scales from their books.

ALL STUDENTS should be making the effort to practice at home, especially on days when they do not have class. Even 10-15 minutes goes a long way, as playing an instrument is a skill that relies on both physical and mental endurance. Listening to the recordings on our band website is also an important part of practicing, so that musicians can hear where their part fits into the whole of the piece. Please encourage them to play for you, and ask about what they are learning in class!

Let’s go Cubs!

Band Photos!

Good afternoon Band Parents!

Next Wednesday and Thursday, our photographer will be taking professional band photos during all of our classes. Please have your student bring their band polo and BLACK BOTTOMS to wear to school that day. If you have ordered a polo, they will be given to them at the beginning of class.

The photo proofs will be available for you to see and purchase packages at our winter concerts. I am also still in need of three more parents to help run the picture table at the 6th grade concert, and four parents to help run the table at the 7th and 8th grade concert. You WILL still be able to see your students perform!!! So if you can help, please let me know!
