Practice Makes…Permanent!

Before spring break, each group has gone over practicing in learning the finesse of smaller chunks of “problem spots” in their music, joined into larger and larger “chunks” before working on the entire piece of music. PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR STUDENT TO PRACTICE THIS WAY AT HOME! Simply running through a song without warming up or going over the trickier spots is not proper practicing! 6th graders should also still be working on reading their note names aloud, and ALL bands should be at least listening to the music on our band website while going over fingerings. If you have any questions about practicing, please e-mail me. With PARCC this week again, there will only be a few weeks left until the concerts! It is imperative that your students are home working on our music correctly!

If you have any questions, please e-mail me, as that is the best way to reach me. Have a great week!

Practice Makes…Permanent!

This past week, each group has gone over practicing in learning the finesse of smaller chunks of “problem spots” in their music, joined into larger and larger “chunks” before working on the entire piece of music. PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR STUDENT TO PRACTICE THIS WAY AT HOME! It is imperative that your students are home working on our music correctly!

6th Grade

6th graders have been working on dynamics, and are really beginning to demonstrate them in their music—great job!

We will begin looking more at dynamics as well as tempo for 4th quarter

Concert Date: April 25th—watch for more info after Spring Break!

7
th Grade

7th grade is also working on dynamics in the context of their spring concert music, and have also been working on lip-slur techniques. This is especially important for brass instruments, and they should be doing these on a daily basis at home to build strength in their embouchures. We are also working on listening for who has the melody and to not “bury” them with the supporting parts.

Concert Date: April 25th—watch for more info after Spring Break!

8
th Grade

8th grade has begun to work on phrasing (breathing, or musical sentences). We are also working on listening for who has the melody and to not “bury” them with the supporting parts. Dynamics and articulation continue to play an important role in our daily practice as well.

Concert Date: May 9th—watch for more info coming in April!

All Grades will be working on the chromatic scale this quarter, and as always, can take the scale quiz early, or as often as they choose before the deadline at the end of the quarter.

Band Notes — Week of 03.12.18

4th Quarter is here already!?! Time sure flies by quickly! Speaking of time, I hope you’re all adjusting to the daylight savings time—I’m really missing that extra hour of sleep, but will thoroughly enjoy having more hours of daylight! 🙂

T-shirt orders
T-shirts should be here before spring break, provided all goes well. I’m really loving the new design! Thanks again Adrianna!

**Daily practice is HIGHLY encouraged! We have been working on practicing sections in small “chunks” that we link together to make larger “chunks” to make it easier to learn the music better and quicker. Students should not only be practicing on their instruments at home, but also listening to the recordings on our band website while following along with their music. (https://asband.wordpress.com)

The next Band Booster Meeting is on Tuesday, March 20th at 6:30 pm at Drauden Point Middle School.

PARCC testing is coming up the week of March 19th. Please remind your students to get a good night’s rest and eat a healthy and substantial breakfast!

Jazz Band

There is NO jazz band this week on March 12 due to the SIP Day.

There WILL be jazz band on the 19th!

As always, if you have any questions, please e-mail me, as that is the best way to reach me.

Have a great week! 🙂

Band Notes – week of 02.25.18

CONGRATULATIONS
To our 8th grade band members who performed at the Plainfield Middle School Band and Choir festival on Saturday! While there is no “official” scoring, they earned a “Superior” rating, and had an outstanding performance! Great job !!!
If you would like a copy of their performance (and if you are also a choir parent who wants the choir recordings),  please have your student bring a blank CD-R (NOT an RW!!!) to me at school with their first and last name on it, and whether you want band, choir, or both performances.

At Home Practice
Please continue to encourage your students to practice at home!  6th and 7th graders are working on dynamics (ask them to teach you!) and 8th graders will be sight-reading their spring concert music (ask them what makes sight-reading successful and have them walk you through the process!) The same thing that makes a sports team champions is what makes a band awesome – careful, deliberate, and daily practice. Even if it’s only 10-15 minutes, proper and careful practice will reinforce concepts and muscle memory. Check out the tips on our “parents” tab for more information!

Plainfield Middle School Band Skyzone Night!
A reminder that our Middle School Band Skyzone (Joliet) night is coming up on Thursday, March 1 from 6-8pm. The cost is $20 per student, plus $3 for Skysocks. Money will be collected at the door–do NOT bring it to school. Siblings and friends of band students are welcome to attend. Please see the flyer emailed out late January for all the details.

Summer Band Camp Scholarship
Every year, the Plainfield Middle School Band Boosters provide scholarships for band students to help ease the financial burden of attending a summer band camp or secure private lessons. If you are interested in applying for a scholarship, please visit the following webpage for all of the details:

https://plainfieldbandboosters.org/content/summer-band-camp-scholarship

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please e-mail me, as that is the best way to reach me.
Have a great week!
